On his way back from the Crusades, a knight encounters Death. He challenges her to a game of chess in order to postpone his inevitable end and find answers to his questions about faith. Along the way, the knight and his squire meet various intriguing characters, ranging from a family of troubadours to a group of fanatical believers.
