William Lee, an American expatriate in Mexico City, spends most of his days alone, with the exception of a few contacts with the small American community. His meeting with Eugene Allerton, a former soldier who has recently arrived in the city, gives him hope for the first time that he will be able to build an intimate relationship with someone.
