In his labyrinthine castle, the King of Takicardie, a sad, fat, tyrannical character, swoons over a pretty shepherdess painted on one of the wood panelling in his bedroom. But the shepherdess is in love with the chimney sweep next door. The lovebirds flee. Furious, the king sends for the shepherdess.
