Kinolatino - LOS COLONOS

Tierra del Fuego, 1901. In the southernmost tip of South America, a tyrannical Chilean landowner enlists three men - a mercenary from Texas, an officer from the British army and a mixed-race Chilean guide - to go on an expedition together to mark out his country's borders: a passage for his flocks of sheep to the Atlantic would open a new trade route. Mutual tensions run high when the true nature of the journey, the expulsion and murder of the "indígenas," is revealed. Before long, the expedition turns into a violent manhunt.

Los Colonos is a rugged western that takes a look at Chile's colonial past in which the genocide of the indigenous population plays an important role. In his feature debut, director Felipe Gálvez outlines the difference between a history and a reality that has been little exposed and that still leaves its mark in today's Chile. The blood-curdling story with breathtaking images of Patagonia premiered at Un Certain Regard in Cannes, was awarded the FIPRESCI prize there and was subsequently selected by Chile as an Oscar entry.
