The twins Jeanne and Simon Marwan are stunned when they receive two letters from their late mother, Nawal, at the notary’s office. One letter is addressed to their father, whom they believed to be dead, and the other is for their brother, whose existence they never knew.

For Jeanne, these enigmatic letters explain her mother’s elusive silence during the final weeks of her life. Jeanne decides to travel to the Middle East to learn more about her family history. Her brother Simon is unmoved by his mother’s musings; to him, she had always been cold and distant. Yet his love for his sister is so strong that he joins her in the search for their family history. Together with the notary, they uncover their mother’s tragic fate, marked as much by war and hatred as by the courage of an extraordinary woman.
