Seventeen-year-old Ainara (convincingly portrayed by Blanca Soroa in her first feature film) is an intelligent and idealistic young woman who lost her mother at an early age. Like her devout mother and other family members, she attends a Christian school. Everyone around her expects her to go to university, yet she herself seems more drawn to a contemplative life as a nun. When Ainara tells her family she is considering entering a convent, it provokes mixed reactions. Her father has doubts but above all wants to support his daughter. Her atheist aunt Maite believes her niece is about to throw her life away. Does she truly want this, or is she being influenced by the spiritual guidance at her school? Los Domingos, by Spanish director Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (Dicen, Cinco Lobitos), invites discussion and explores both the positive aspects and the darker sides of Ainara’s religious calling. At the same time, it raises questions about tolerance, indoctrination, conformity, and personal freedom. Through subtle observations and sharp dialogue, the film creates a poignant portrait of a young girl trying to find her own path. The film was a major success in Spain and had its world premiere at the Festival international du film de Saint-Sébastien, where it won no fewer than five awards, including the Golden Shell for Best Film. In Belgium, it premiered at theFilm Festival Oostende.
