In 1979, Delphine Seyrig was deeply moved when she read Calamity Jane's Letters to Her Daughter. In this hidden correspondence, the letters never having been sent to the child given up for adoption, she found the words of a mother to her absent daughter, those of a woman marginalised because she was free to transgress the rules of her gender.
Delphine Seyrig planned to make a film. She began writing a screenplay and set off in 1983 to Billings, Montana, to follow in the footsteps of the heroine and her daughter. Unfortunately, she did not have the time to make her film.
In 2018, based on the rushes from the trip to the United States, Delphine Seyrig's working documents and her correspondence with her son, Babette Mangolte has woven a tribute to the actress and her commitment to bringing this correspondence to the screen.
The director, in turn, plunges into the world of Calamity Jane, blending Delphine Seyrig's project with her own vision.
