Hollywood, 1927. George Valentin is handsome, charismatic, and the biggest star of silent films. However, when sound films are introduced, George's career goes into decline. Alcohol and poverty further contribute to his decline. Meanwhile, the career of rising young actress Peppy Miller skyrockets. She offers to help George return to the silver screen and encourages him to become a dancer. Together, they attempt to find their way back to the top.
