LE CHANTIER DES GOSSES

Jean Harlez

BE, 76', 1956, VO FR ST NL

Synopsis : The narrow streets of the Marolles are full with kids. Their paradise is a wasteland. One day, the wasteland is barricaded, disembowelled by machines, while the surrounding houses are pulled down. The amazement of the kids soon turns into revolt: they choose a leader, manufacture catapults with the shoulder straps of their parents and decide to start a war against the entrepreneurs and architects...

Le chantier des gosses takes us on a journey into their universe. The kids (the youngest is 2 years and a half, the oldest 14) are the main actors, playing their role with a lot of spontaneity and a great deal of improvisation.

Le film précédé du court-métrage documentaire LES GENS DU QUARTIER :

As Brussels prepares to host the 1958 World's Fair, the Marolles market is in full swing, filled with nonchalance and tradition. Among the remouleur, the merchant of the four seasons, the snail seller, the itinerant glazier and the “ketjes” in search of incartades, the old coco merchant sells licorice lemonade, his can on his back. It's all heart-to-heart, a perfect blend of temperament and popular philosophy. An invaluable document on the small Brussels business of the 1950s.
