ALICE GUY, PIONNIÈRE DU CINEMA
FR, 50', 1898, SILENT FILM
Alice Guy was born on July 1, 1873, in Saint-Mandé and spent her early years in Switzerland, Chile, and France. In Paris, she studied shorthand and typing, which led to her being hired in 1894 as a secretary by Léon Gaumont, then a representative at Max Richard’s Comptoir Général de Photographie.
On March 22, 1895, invited by the Lumière brothers, she attended the presentation of their cinematograph before the Société d’Encouragement pour l’Industrie nationale in Paris.
In August 1895, Léon Gaumont took over the Comptoir Général de Photographie and established the limited partnership “L. Gaumont & Cie”; Alice Guy continued the adventure by his side.
The first Gaumont films were intended to promote the quality of the equipment, which came from workshops located in the Buttes-Chaumont neighborhood, the future Cité Elgé. These included scenes of daily life, newsreels, views of Paris, and landscapes.
