MASTERCLASS - ARCHIPELS NITRATE

Go back

To mark our exhibition ORIGINS OF CINEMA: Magic Lanterns, Cinematograph, and Pioneer Projectors, Palace is offering a special program!

One Thursday a month, Palace highlights a technical film profession. This is done in partnership with film schools, the André Delvaux Academy, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, and mediarte.

In April, Julien Contreau will come to Palace for a masterclass on editing, on the occasion of a screening of Claudio Pazienza's ARCHIPELS NITRATE. The event will explore the work of film editors: the construction of rhythm, the creation of meaning, and the role of editing in the screenwriting process. The masterclass will be preceded by the film screening and will be conducted in French.

Julien Contreau holds a degree in editing from INSAS in Brussels. Active in creative documentary filmmaking for over twenty-five years, he has worked with directors such as Claudio Pazienza, Comes Chahbazian, Thierry Knauff, Khristine Gillard, Clémence Hébert, Éléonore Saintagnan, and Grégoire Motte.

He is involved in production workshops, first at the Atelier Jeunes Cinéastes (AJC!), then at the Centre de l’Audiovisuel in Brussels (CBA).

With his company Matière Première, he develops films as a producer for Comes Chahbazian, Khristine Gillard, Marta Kucza, Messaline Raverdy, Elsa Rössler, Eleftherios Panagiotou, Nina Alexandraki, and Maïté Jeannolin.

ARCHIPELS NITRATE

Claudio Pazienza, BE/FR, 2009, 64', VO FR ST EN

Tribute to the Royal Belgian Film Archive, this film offers a striking poetic and philosophical exploration of cinematic images.

"Intimate and personal portrait of the Royal Belgian Cinémathèque (renamed CINEMATEK). And on that screen, flashes of the world, an idea of History, of beauty. On that screen, a congruent portion of humanity. I am what I have seen, said Matisse. But all images do not remain intact. And even less so, the self image. Time permeates them, spoils, martyrises them. And this delicate skin — this layer of nitrate — is the symptom. Archipels nitrate talks of cinema and time in the form of a visual symphony in which a hundred films partake in a unique journey." Claudio Pazienza
