The film will be preceded by Pour Febe Elizabeth Vasquez, El Salvador (running time: 3 minutes). This short film was created as part of a global campaign marking the 30th anniversary of Amnesty International. Each country had to design its own action related to thirty prisoners of conscience (designated by Amnesty).
Tehran, 1978. Eight-year-old Marjane dreams of the future and envisions herself as a prophet who will save the world. Surrounded by her modern, educated parents, and deeply attached to her grandmother, she enthusiastically follows the events leading to the revolution and the downfall of the Shah's regime. With the rise of the Islamic Republic comes a new era, where "Revolutionary Guards" monitor dress codes and behavior. When forced to wear the veil, Marjane dreams of becoming a revolutionary herself. Soon, the war with Iraq brings bombings, shortages, and the loss of loved ones. As domestic repression tightens, her outspoken personality and rebellious streak get her into ever-increasing trouble.
